I spoke briefly with Mark about this. Last time I did try to access a multipath
slave it was locked by multipath itself. He did experience otherwise.
I still had no time to verify it (since it might have been some specific Ubuntu
patch) but ordering in this specific case matters.
We can for sure prefer dm-* before other block devices. It's only a matter of
filtering in the right order.
