Thought that this list was dead. I received a spontaneous round of total
indifference when I posted my problem back in Nov 2007, with not a
single peep from the list then and since.

Do a 'tail -f /var/log/messages' and then plug-in the the Maxtor drive -
the kernel should detect the "plug-and-play" signal and show a couple of
messages to the effect that a new SCSI drive has been detected. 

This will at least confirm that the h/w is working as expected - and if
so, then you should proceed to figuring out why automount is not doing
its thing.
