if you run powerpath, try to run without as there have been very clear
problems with it.

raw throughput really is not a problem, mkdir will take time, but we
optimize for io throughput for the database, not metadata. 
you have to use the tools with O_DIRECT etc

Even worse, while we can create a directory, we are unable to delete the directory after it has been created.
