though I have sometimes wondered if we shouldn't just declare that the
second arg of all functions with names matching emit?() is *always*
indented by two spaces just so that adding an emitle() etc to a run of
emit?()s doesn't either cause jaggedness or require a pile of annoying
space addition to a lot of adjacent emit lines. (Probably I should just
teach my Emacs to do the appropriate space-additions automatically.)
