Fused with the test infrastructure improvements, where it also kinda
fits: the logging improvements can't move forwards past the DOF stash
stuff (since they include the stuff to get fuse_log to work even before
final daemonization, and some of the DOF stash code, which uses fuse_log
heavily, happens then), and this commit can't move backwards because the
setting of the testing variable depends on stuff added late in the DOF
stash commit.
