The second patch is a combination of the two typecast optimization
patches, per Kris's request.  Thanks for the observation about
eliminating the extra register.

The first patch is a surprising partner.  The second patch makes
a curcpu test pass.  Since that test does not actually check the
value of curcpu, however, it seemed to make sense to introduce a
test that does so.  Not a big deal, but it just seemed to make
sense to check that value.  Otherwise, there is no particular
connection between the two patches.
